The ActionLaser 1400 is also ideally suited for current dot matrix, ink jet, or 300 dpi laser owners who want to upgrade to a true 600 dpi laser.

Unlike most laser printers in its price range, the ActionLaser 1400 offers true 600 x 600 dpi printing with edge smoothing technology and microfine toner for exceptional print quality. In addition, the ActionLaser 1400 has an Intel i960 RISC processor for fast processing of even the most complex documents, freeing up the computer sooner so that users can move on to other tasks.

Two megabytes of memory is standard, and image compression technology allows users to print complicated documents with less printer memory. The ActionLaser 1400 also offers PCL 5e compatibility for reliable operation with thousands of software packages.

The ActionLaser 1400 provides convenience as well. The 100-sheet paper tray feeds letter and legal size paper, plus envelopes. A Windows driver comes with the printer, as does Printer Control Panel software making setup and control of the printer a snap. A 4,000 page imaging cartridge allows users to print more pages than the competition, right out of the box. A PostScript Level 2 compatible option is also available. It all adds up to the best value in 600 dpi laser printing.

COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

How does the ActionLaser 1400 customer differ from the ActionLaser 1600 customer?
The ActionLaser 1400 is a personal laser designed for users who want extraordinary looking output without spending a lot of money. They don't require the faster engine speed, more powerful processor, high capacity paper trays, connectivity options or printer sharing capabilities that the ActionLaser 1600 provides. They are most concerned with print quality, ease-of-use, size, and cost.
What does "true 600 x 600 dpi printing" mean?
The ActionLaser 1400's controller and high-precision laser assembly is capable of addressing and marking a true 600 x 600 dot per inch resolution. Some laser printers in this category utilize chip-based laser modulation techniques to simulate 600 dpi output from a 300 dpi laser assembly. Other lasers manufacturers are claiming "600 dpi Class Output," when in reality they are only printing 300 x 600 or 300 x 1200 dpi. The print quality of the 600 dpi printing is far superior to these other approaches.
Why would someone want 600 dpi resolution over 300 dpi resolution?
Because 600 dpi resolution prints four times as many dots per inch as 300 dpi, many more gray levels of output are possible. This results in greater detail, clarity, and subtlety of photographic and scanned images. 600 dpi output also provides finer lines, especially important for detailed drawings and small fonts.
Can the ActionLaser 1400 print a full page of 600 dpi graphics with its 2MB of standard memory?
Yes. Using image compression technology, the ActionLaser 1400 is capable of printing an entire page of 600 dpi graphics with the standard memory.
How is memory upgraded on the ActionLaser 1400?
Most users will never have to add memory to the ActionLaser 1400, but should memory be required it is easily upgraded to a maximum of 18MB using industry standard 72-pin SIMMs. Two SIMM sockets located under a cover at the rear of the printer accept 1MB, 2MB, 4MB or 8MB SIMMs. SIMMs must be 72-pin and have an access time of 100ns or faster.
Does the ActionLaser 1400 use the same accessories as the ActionLaser 1100?
Yes. The ActionLaser 1400 uses the same host-based PostScript level 2 option and 4000 page imaging cartridge as the ActionLaser 1100.
What else does the ActionLaser 1400 have in common with the ActionLaser 1100?
Like the ActionLaser 1100, the ActionLaser 1400 incorporates a toner saving mode that lets users cut toner use and cost; a software printer control panel that allows users to change printer settings from the PC and receive printer status messages on screen; a Windows 3.1 driver for out-of-the-box compatibility; and a reset button for prindng a self-demo and dearing error conditions.
How is the PostScript Level 2 compatible upgrade accomplished?
Unlike the ActionLaser 1500/1600, the PostScript Level 2 compatible upgrade for the ActionLaser 1400 is not installed in the printer. It is software based and runs on the host computer. The software is easy to install and provides PostScript Level 2 compatibility.
What is the button located next to the parallel interface at the back of the printer for?
The button serves two purposes. Briefly pressing the button after turning the printer on prints a demo/status page. This page prints a list of features and current printer settings and is an ideal sales tool. The button is also used to reset the printer and clear certain error conditions.
