Shamelessly borrowing a tactic from a friend, I will now be
including little blurbs about my friends to go along with a simple
link. Why? It makes me happy. I'm still in the process of adding
the blurbs, though.
Andrew Alford in addition to Carl, lived across the
hall from me at the beginning of my freshman year at CMU. He is one
of the people I know who is truly talented in the art of
mess-creation, became one of the original meatmen, and was one of the
only people I consider to be in the "inner crew" that was also into
the FPS-style PC games. I remember that towards the end of freshman
year, X-wing vs TIE Fighter was due to be released. We were playing a
cracked copy of it before it was released in stores. (Tsk tsk, I
know, but we did buy copies eventually). He and I ruled at that
game--me with my trusty Flightstick Pro, and he with his Microsoft
Sidewinder. Had it been released earlier in the year, it would
undoubtedly become a far more popular game than it did. As it was, we
pretty much played it through finals, anyway. Someday, we will game
again. Right now, Andrew is a flight instructor around the area of
West Chester, New York. There is something of a story behind Andrew's
becoming a professional pilot, rather than something that one would
expect him to persue with his Computer Science degree from CMU. But
that will have to wait for another day.
Damned if I can find Chris Allwein's page
anywhere. I don't remember ever actually meeting Chris, but it was
probably in the Lounge at some point. We had a rousing table-tennis
rivalry going during our freshman year, when there still was a table
in the lounge. "So, we meet again..." Until Chris graduated (a
semester early, the bastard) we saw each other a good bit, and we
became reasonably good friends. Chris is in the process of returning
to Pittsburgh after living in Lebanon, PA for a few years. This is
the result of a string of coincidences, starting with me getting the
idea to call Chris one night when we were making a rib roast. We
convinced him that the food would be ready just about the time he
would arrive in Pittsburgh, if he left now. And the rest...
Colin Barth, aka Phoenix
Alycia
Bencloski-Brashear
Peter Berger
Another friend whose webpage no longer exists is Jeff
Blasingame. Initially acquaintances through the Jazz Band
during our 5th form year at The Hill, upon a suggestion from some
faculty member, decided to become prefects together for our next year.
We spent that year in a room on 2nd floor Upper School West, with
Hallmaster Mark Rigg. Many pages could be written about those
surroundings and that year, but suffice to say that we became good
friends, with many common interests. He's back in Colorado at this
point, though, and I think he's a bit pissed that I don't write that
often.
Derrick Brashear
is currently one of my very good friends. Like me, he enjoys long
drives to various places, but unlike me he enjoys looking at various
trains and streetcars once he gets there. One of the first people I
really started "talking" to in certain senses, he's been very valuable
as a friend. Also being a native Pittsburgher, he continues to
elucidate certain local aspects. He is, among many other things, the
local Zephyr god, and one of our local AFS Elders.
Vince Broz
Ah, Huan Chang.
During freshman year, we knew each other through the lounge and
through somewhat serious table tennis. Our contact since then has
been sparse, mostly my fault, but he appears to still be at CMU.
Chaskiel
Grundman
Kathy Habel
Chris Hanson
Mike Harm
Jeff Hutzelman
Bill Jerome was a
fellow Hammerschlag freshman, though for the life of me I can't
remember much about our interactions at the time. He's also still
around Pittsburgh.
Brad Keryan is
a friend I think I remember meeting through Oren. Smart, studious,
and neat (though this last has recently been called into question),
something of a Linux Kernel and other hacker in general, he's someone
you want on your side when the revolution comes. Currently located in
Austin, Texas (which I didn't visit on my trip down there but will
have to at some point), we keep in touch via Zephyr.
Chatchai
Khunpitiluck was a fellow AP Computer Science student at The Hill.
A Thai Scholar, it has his post-graduate year, and my 3rd form year.
John Koser, now
apparently at MIT! Fellow Hill classmate, and one of the few that I
was on the same level with, technology speaking. Owner of many guns,
we primarily interacted during our 5th and 6th form years.
Oren Laskin was
another inhabitant of 'schlag, though he lived in a different wing,
and from habit that year, I rarely left the cocoon of my room except
for work and the occasional class, so I didn't see that much of him.
I got to know him better and see him more during sophomore year when
he lived in Cathedral Mansions with Kevin. I remember hanging out a
good bit of time in that apartment. Then he lived in the Shady House,
and after then, the house on Phillips formerly known as The Asylum.
He's now out in CA working at Gordian, though unlike many of my other
friends, we keep in regular touch over Zephyr.
Zach Loafman is someone I got
to know through both the Lounge and the Shady House locations. Smart,
and studious to go with it, he graduated in three years from CMU. We
also keep in touch via Zephyr, and I actually visited his and Kevin's
pad down in Dallas. Various highlights include conversations in his
car at the time, an '86 accord (we could have recorded those and made
a fortune) and extra-dimensional chili.
Nat Lanza
Will Liou
Tom Maher
And then there's Laurel Margulis. One
of my two housemates at the Waldron house. I remember some good
conversations, working together for a time in the Help Center, etc.
Though I also remember a rather...interesting subletter she had one
summer, a fellow by the name of Rob. I'm not going to go into that
here. Fortunately, though she's in Boston, she's also on Zephyr.
Carl--Carl
Meister--one of my most constant and dear friends since Freshman
year, and one of the "gang of four" on 2B. I spent an awful lot of
time in his room, and also typing reports on his computer (since it
had windows and a printer). Then, Sophomore year, I slept a lot on
his bed, as he was in Morewood and I now lived off campus, so I hung
out there often. Deliberately odd in some ways, while he weighs less
than half I do, has such great mental inertia, I wonder
sometimes...oh, before I forget, here's a project we were working on (maybe we should
get back to it), as well as a story he wrote
in Japanese class years ago.
Dave
and Susan Nolan
Another one of my Hill friends is Hitaine Patel.
Unfortunately, not only is his page offline, but I haven't heard from
him in years. If you're out there, I'd like to get back in touch. At
any rate, there are many fond memories, one in particular was when we
had the AP Computer Science final exam location..well, uh wrong. ;)
Noppadol
Pringvanich
Someone else with whom losing touch has been entirely my fault
is Shane
Quiterio. We met in the Hill's computer lab when I was a fresh
2nd former, and he was a 4th former. We shared many common
computer-type interests, one of which was "bbsing", though I remember
playing various computer games, too.
Elaine
Ramundo
Scott
Robbins
DaR, otherwise known as Dan Root, was my other
housemate at the Waldron house. Well, he actually owned the place.
He's an incredibly laid back cool frood who I met during my tenure in
the Help Center. I remember mostly listening to him about various
local technological things, and sleeping on the couch he had in his
office. At the end of that year he was making arrangements to buy a
house, and I wanted to get off campus, so. I watched him play untold
hours of Saturn/Playstation games, as well as playing him in certain
KoF and Bushido Blade contests. He then abruptly left for Seattle,
forcing me to find a new apartment. I've been using the phone to keep
in touch with this one, but he appears to be on Zephyr more lately.
It would rule if he were still in Pittsburgh, but he seems to like it
out there.
Tom Rothamel was my
roommate freshman year. Well, after my stint in the Hampton Inn and
dodging a bullet of having a frat-boy-type roommate. He's one of the
truly geeky people I knew...well, let's be honest here. Everyone I
know is geeky in some way. But Tom is more of the archetype, and one
of the few people who were close to my class-skipping level. I
remember going to Highlander with him and Carl and Andy often, as well
as Sunday night O runs, to burn Dine Express.
Deanna Rubin, or D, as more
commonly referred to, is...well, let's put it this way. I respect her
opinion, and care for her well being. She's been one of the few
people that take me down a few pegs when it's needed, and otherwise is
usually a lot of fun to be around. I've dropped her off in Philly a
few times, which forced me to get to know that city better, and get
used to driving in it. "Damn good sandwich."
